The German Research Foundation (DFG) has approved a two-year grant of € 256,000 for the exploration of local lists in Germany. The project will employ to researchers and will be directed by Prof. Thomas Poguntke.
Over the past decades, local lists have had an important and in some places dominant role in local politics. Apart from their wide presence and ongoing success in local elections, local lists draw their strength from their large membership of an estimated 280,000.
Despite these enormous numbers there is hardly any research on the social composition of members of local lists, the motives for their political involvement, their activity and their policy objectives, i.e. their identity.
The project aims, for the first time, to study the members of the FREIE WÄHLER and other local lists, their political and social values, as well as the forms of membership in a nationwide study. By shedding light on this hitherto unknown giant, the PRuF closes a gap in German party research.
